Want to go green? Reduce the environmental footprint of your lawnmower!

Homeowners across the U.S. are able to create beautiful landscapes with powered lawn care equipment. Unfortunately, according to the EPA, 5 percent of the pollution in this country comes from the nitrogen oxide and other toxic compounds released into the atmosphere from mowers, trimmers, and blowers. Fortunately, there are ways to balance the environmental impact.

Choosing the Right Lawnmower

How old is your lawn mower? Mowers manufactured after 1996 have improved emissions due to pressure from the EPA and other environmental regulatory agencies. For example, they contain carbon filters to capture most of the hydrocarbons released.

Reel mowers don’t use gas at all. They also provide a clean cut. Additionally, there are a number of cordless trimmers, edgers, and blowers available if you would rather not use a gas model. These new models pack a more powerful punch than ever before. Regardless of which equipment you buy, take care to cut your grass to about 2 1/2 to 3 inches because it will require less water and fertilizer than longer grass.

Equipment Maintenance

If you decide to use power equipment, don’t neglect routine maintenance. Taking care of your equipment will reduce its effect on the environment. For example:

1. Sharpen blades regularly to increase efficiency and prevent wasted fuel and emissions. Replace the blades on a yearly basis.

2. Replace damaged or worn out parts with original equipment (OEM) parts for protection from leaks and further damage and to keep your equipment running efficiently.

3. Inspect and replace air filters when dirty to keep the engine working properly and reduce exhaust emissions.

Trusted Lawn Care Practices

In addition to lawn equipment maintenance, there are other ways to make a difference. Trusted lawn practices include doing the following:

Plant new grass

Kentucky bluegrass is the most common type of grass in the U.S. but requires a lot of water. Check nurseries for native grasses that use less water and requires less frequent maintenance.

Check your soil

Different types of soil have different watering needs. For example, sandy soil needs more frequent watering than clay soil, but in shorter bursts. That is because the roots in sandy soil absorb water faster, and there is a risk of draining.

Buy an automatic sprinkler

When you use an automatic sprinkler, you can water late at night or just before sun comes up, so the water doesn’t evaporate. Many manufacturers offer ultra-efficient sprinkler heads for improved pressurization.

Use bio-stimulant fertilizers

Trusted fertilizers prevent weeds and strengthen lawn roots. They also protect your lawn from fungus and improve drought tolerance

Landscape your property

If you want to decrease the amount of grass on your property, consider adding more trees and shrubs. Your property will be smaller and easier to manage.
