The Essentials of Spring Lawn Maintenance

Spring is here, and your lawn needs your help so that it can shake off the effects of winter and return to optimal health. How you care for your lawn now will ensure a thick, beautiful yard that you and your family can enjoy for the rest of the year.

One of the largest direct impacts on a healthy lawn is good cultural practices. What does that mean? It’s really just a fancy way of talking about lawn care. Cultural practices include everything from proper mowing, watering, and landscaping.

As a leading lawn fertilization service for homes throughout Bucks County, PA, we here at Go Green Lawn Services know a lot – and care a lot – about cultural practices. The wrong ones can have an immediate and sometimes residual effect on your lawn, and we’re here to help you avoid that!

Here are our recommendations for good spring cultural practices:

In the spring, our experts recommend that you mow your lawn weekly or biweekly (every two weeks). Ideally, we want the grass to be between 3-4 inches long. The longer the blades of grass, the deeper the roots, and deeper roots can absorb nutrients from deeper in the soil. If you have really short grass that’s constantly getting stressed with frequent mowing, on top of heat and droughts, the grass will not be able to stay green and healthy.

We can’t stress this enough: We do NOT want to be watering in the spring. Too much of anything for your lawn can do more damage than good. Usually, we recommend watering in the summer months (June, July, and August) one to three times a week depending on rainfall with deep infrequent watering, just like nature provides.

Weeds in flower or mulch beds should be removed, so their seeds don’t spread into the grass area. Sticks and leaves should also be cleaned up so the grass can get the sunlight and water it needs.
